Our geology day is coming up next Tuesday. We will be meeting at the school at 6:20 am and returning by 6:00 pm (traffic depending). I will send out an email with our eta when we get past Vancouver. This is a full day with multiple outdoor activities. Students need to bring all regular hiking layers, including rain shells and warm layers. The mine tour gets very cold. Hiking boots are required for the hike up the Chief but regular running shoes could be used for other parts of the trip. Students should bring plenty of food and at least 1L of water. We have no plans on stopping for food so please make sure students bring plenty of snacks and not just food money. We are very excited about this trip and all the real world learning that can take place.
We begin canoeing tomorrow (Thursday April 17) at Cultus Lake. It is likely to be rainy and cool so students should bring full rain gear and warm non-cotton layers to wear underneath. There is not a plan to get wet tomorrow, but canoe tipping can happen when learning. A towel and some dry clothes are also important to have in a backpack at the lake. Our canoeing days all go beyond the bell schedule as this training time is important in preparation for the Bowron Lakes. We leave school at 12:45 and will be back to Vedder at 3:45. Students will be able to get back in the school. Please make sure to do your best to make sure your son and daughter do not miss these training days.
Drive a Ford
This fundraiser is on April 26. It is a school wide fundraiser but OEA gets 1/3 of what is raised. We want to do our part in bringing people to the school. Please see our previous post for more information on this fundraiser. Students are being asked to find at least 5 driving adults who can commit to driving a ford. The next four students to bring in 10 commitment forms will get a $20 Purdy's gift card. Each person who drives for a specific student also allows that students name to be entered in a draw for an iPad mini. The more people you bring to the fundraiser, the more entries in the draw. This is our last fundraiser and we are hoping to raise a bit of a buffer for our Bowron Trip, as well as purchase a few more items needed for the trip (dry bags and tarps).
Geology Tour to Squamish
If you have checked the calendar lately you will see we have a big day on April 29. We will be doing a multiple stop field trip to the Squamish area to study the unique geology and geography of that region. Stops include Britannia Mine, Brandywine Falls, and a hike up the back of the Stawamus Chief. This is a full day. We will be leaving the school early and will be home around 6:30. Specific times will be sent home before the date, but plan on about a 12 hour day. This is an important academic trip and it is essential that all students can make it.
Thank you to all who made an order for our Purdy's fundraiser. The chocolate has arrived and can be picked up Friday between 3:00 and 4:00. The Christmas and Easter Purdy's fundraiser will become a regular part of our yearly fundraising, so thank you for helping us get that started this year
Vedder Middle School is hosting the Drive a Ford fundraiser on April 26. This fundraiser is a joint effort between the athletics program, student services, and outdoor education. To do our part, we would like each of our student to try and recruit 4 to 5 adults who will pledge to be there on April 26 to drive a Ford. The poster below explains the details of this fundraiser
Our school goal is to get to the maximum $6000, with a third of that money going to each department. OEA students have been given the school pledge forms, attached below. Please make sure students return the bottom of these filled out forms to school. The first 5 OED students to bring us 5 forms will receive a $20 Purdy's gift card. For every person a student recruits, that student gets their name entered into a draw for an iPad mini. We really want to see an OED student win this. We love technology in the classroom (When used at the appropriate time. I'm talking to you Nick, Mercedes, Jade...).
This will bring us to the end of our fundraising for this year. Canoe training begins next Friday. Please remember to check the calendar for bus times. Some days go a bit beyond the regular bell. It is important for all students to make every effort to be at these training sessions before the Bowron Lakes trip. Please make note of this when making appointments for your son or daughter.
