The winter season with the Chilliwack Centre of Excellence Kayak club is still going strong. Remember all of our students are members until March, when they could renew their membership ($10). Don't let the icy picture for the above events fool you. These races are all in the balmy lower mainland and are a great opportunity for anyone who did our course. Pool sessions are also still going on. See the link below for Centre of Excellence schedule.
The bottle drive is finally here on Saturday January 18. Thank you to all parents who have told me they can help with sorting or driving a truck. We will be meeting at VMS at 9:30 am on Saturday and collecting bottles until 2:00. If you can help but have not told me please send me an email as soon as you know. One or two more trucks may be helpful. If you can only make part of the day that is okay. If you have bottles of your own, please just drop them off at the school during this time. I have talked to most students about being there. If students have no prior commitments we expect them to help.
Anyone who is reading this who is not directly connected to the OEA program as a parent but would like to help, please feel free to drop off any refundable items at the VMS between 9:30am and 2:00pm.
We are hoping this fundraiser gets us very close to our goal for the Bowron Lakes. Thank you for your support.
We found our time at Manning Park to be just a little rushed last week. We are going to change the departure times for the Jan 15 and Jan 23 trips to a 6:30 departure. Please have your son or daughter at the school by 6:25 am on these days to depart by 6:30. I have made this change on the OEA calendar ( http://www.vmsoutdoored.com/calendar.html ) We apologize for any inconvenience.
Happy New Year everyone. We are excited for all the things to come this year in the OEA. Here are some upcoming events.
We will be doing 5 days of cross country skiing over the next two months. This will be our major PE unit over this time. We will be doing this at Manning Park. Please see the calendar for dates and times. The first three trips are early starts, and the last two arrive home a bit after school. I sent home a parent consent form for this before Christmas but I forgot to attach the Manning Park Registration Form. Please find both forms attached below. I will have a meeting for OEA students on Monday to explain this form and give out a copy. I must get these completed forms back at the start of Tuesday's class.
Bowron Lakes Trip, Fundraising Bottle Drive
Thank you to all who have said they can help with a truck or sorting for the bottle drive on January 18. Hopefully all students have now distributed flyers in their neighbourhoods. We will be distributing flyers in a few neighbourhoods near the school during Tuesday's PE class. Remember, we will be meeting at the front entrance of VMS at 9:30 am on January 18.
The trip to the Bowron Lakes is coming together. We now have official permission from the School District and we have booked our trip with the Provincial Park. We will begin canoeing at Cultus Lake for PE in April to prepare ourselves for this trip.
Snowshoe Trips and Winter Campout
Please note in the Calendar that we have snowshoeing trips scheduled for February 6 and February 17. We also have a two night winter campout scheduled for February 26-28. Please begin looking at your calendars in anticipation of this. All of these trips will take place in Manning Park, where generally better snow conditions will exist. We will always take the upcoming weather forecast into consideration before these trips.
Thank you everyone. It has been a great year so far. We hope you had a nice Christmas break and look forward to a busy rest of the year in the OEA.
